This is the first picture ever taken on the surface of Mars. It was taken by the Viking I Lander, exactly 24 weeks before the day I was born.
My late grandfather on my mother’s side, John Thomas Branley, was an inventor and a member of the Viking Program to explore the surface of Mars in 1975 and 1976. He designed a new type of wiring for the lander’s memory that was able to withstand cosmic radiation that compromised earlier space missions. He also designed the wiring systems for the MX and Trident missiles and most likely a bunch of other stuff that has been sealed in classified files.
As news and images of Curiosity begin to trickle in I reflect, with pride and honor, on the life of my Grandfather; the contribution that my grandfather made to the space program, the nation and the future of human kind.
